TREK OVERVIEW & QUICK FACTS
About RUPIN PASS TREK
Rupin Pass (4,650m) is widely celebrated as one of India's most thrilling and dynamic trekking adventures. Spanning across two states—from the remote village of Dhaula in Uttarakhand to Sangla in Himachal Pradesh—this trek is famous for its ever-changing scenery and its iconic three-tiered Rupin waterfall.
The trek traces the Rupin river from its subtropical origins, leading trekkers through hanging villages like Sewa where ancient multistory wooden temples showcase exquisite local architecture. Every day brings a completely new landscape, shifting from dense fir forests to open glacial valleys.
The visual climax of the approach is the lower waterfall camp at Dhanderas Thatch. Here, trekkers camp in a massive green U-shaped valley directly at the base of a roaring 1,500-foot waterfall that cascades down from the hanging glaciers above.
Climbing up past the upper waterfall requires scrambling over boulder fields and traversing steep snow bridges. The final push to Rupin Pass involves climbing a thrilling, near-vertical snow gully (the 'Rupin Gully') where step-kicking and trekking pole precision are vital.
Cresting the narrow saddle of Rupin Pass rewards you with stunning views of the Kinnaur Kailash range. The exhilarating sliding descent down the snowfields into the Baspa valley makes Rupin Pass an unforgettable, action-packed Himalayan classic.
