TREK OVERVIEW & QUICK FACTS
About GAUMUKH TAPOVAN TREK
Gaumukh Tapovan (4,463m) is one of the most spiritually iconic and visually rewarding treks in the world. This legendary journey takes pilgrims and adventurers alike to the literal source of the holy Ganges river and up into high-altitude alpine meadows positioned right at the base of India's most celebrated peaks.
Starting from the sacred temple town of Gangotri, the well-marked trail gently follows the Bhagirathi river through pine forests and past dramatic rock faces to Chirbasa and Bhojbasa. Along the way, the towering peaks of the Bhagirathi group continuously beckon trekkers forward.
At Gaumukh (4,000m), trekkers witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of the sacred Bhagirathi river rushing out from the massive, cavernous snout of the Gangotri Glacier. From here, the route leaves traditional trails behind, requiring trekkers to traverse the living, shifting ice and boulder debris of the glacier itself.
A steep, challenging climb up the lateral moraine wall leads to the magical high-altitude oasis of Tapovan. Here, lush green seasonal meadows crisscrossed by crystal-clear streams sit suspended directly beneath the colossal, vertical granite pyramid of Mt. Shivling (6,543m).
Camping at Tapovan under a canopy of stars, with Shivling, Meru, and Bhagirathi peaks glowing in the moonlight, is a profoundly spiritual and unforgettable experience. This trek represents the ultimate convergence of Himalayan adventure and sacred tradition.
